Academic Word of the Week

19 May, 2022

Hello and welcome to today’s Academic Word of the Week!

We hope you all had a wonderful Eid break and are full of energy for the upcoming summer semester.

Today’s word is a verb which will be especially familiar to all geologists out there:

ERODE

Pronunciation: /ɪˈrəʊd/

Meaning:

  1. To gradually destroy the surface of something through the actions of wind, rain, waves etc.

Example sentence: The cliff face is gradually being eroded by the waves.

  2. To gradually destroy something or make it weaker over time.

Example sentence: Repeated exam failure eroded his confidence.

Adjectives that often collocate (=go with) with the verb ERODE include badly, seriously, and severely.

It’s also worth noting the noun derided from ERODE: EROSION.

That’s all for this week. Enjoy your weekend and see you next week for another fascinating word.
